Lancea Sanctum

it is time....

Okay an update on all the mess. Things have switched places. The other night I tried to see if my hunch was correct that I can connect through the phone part of the cable modem to Juno after setting it back to dialup settings, I was able to. I also was checking the ZoneAlarm because I noticed when mom was talking to Cox that she was being told to pull up Command Prompt and do "ipconfig" which is one of the things I saw Uncle Wayne do when he was doing the networking. So I was comparing the ip numbers between what it was saying on the Dell, what it was saying on the Compaq and the ZA settings on both.

There was a difference on one of the machines, I think the Compaq, possibly due to me having to make yet another Win98 profile because of the computer locking up on having loaded the Comstar manual in Acrobat Reader 5 and me talking to Shymk on MSN and then it "forgetting" my password.

So I tried to get the network to work and possibly get broadband back to the Dell by fiddling a little with Zone Alarm as much as possible without screwing things up worse than they already are...then I loaded Juno, set it for dialup, got online there and did my weekly thing in Cybertown and downloaded/checked the mail and then after that I remember just going to bed.

The next morning mom and I discovered that the Dell got the broadband back but when I went to check my mail on the web on the Compaq, I saw that THIS TIME the Compaq not only lost the ability to "look at" the Dell and access files, and share the printer, but it ALSO can't get on the broadband. So we're back at square one of sorts with practically 1.25 computers because I think the phone jack is still occupied, there's also no two prong jack, I don't think I'd be able now at this point to unhook the plug from the phone jack to put a double jack in to hook up the Compaq's modem (which in a few weeks would be moot since AT&T would be gone anyway and the Juno is still crap on the Compaq due to me trying to get my old mail restored and it still won't).

So anyway the Compaq is back to being 0.25 of a computer since it's slow, it's old, and it isn't connected to anything to access the internet with much less networked to the Dell to access the internet or anything.

At least I can still play Doom and go back to reading those classics on those science fiction archives CDROMs that my other aunt and uncle gave me.

So joy so far we have the broadband back at least where it belongs on the computer it is primarily intended to be. Over the weekend we would have Uncle Wayne try and fix the networking.

So without further ado I'll just summarize what I would retire so I can have fun with the Firefox extension to make icons....I don't know how to show them here but maybe it's for the best.

There's one that I won't mention...that one is definately retired.

Then almost sadly....the Ai Yori Aoshi ones. I stopped using those a LONG time ago shortly after the breakup with my ex-gf. I used them mostly for our gushy lovy dovy moments...those days are gone now and even though I'm still a fan, like I said in that one long post about the anniversaries (which is filtered) that series had lost most but not all of its meaning to me except for regret that I didn't really find my "Aoi" nor was my relationship having any sort of similarity to Aoi and Kaoru.

Time to wake up to reality...like Sheila told a friend of mine, life is not a fairy tale (or something like that)...there are relationships where one or both are very devoted and would do anything, however someone like Aoi doesn't totally exist, a love like that is nonexistant.

Time for a change of the guard.

Word of Blake

I knew I shouldn't have went to do my supper.....

This irritates me since I thought things would have gone different today....

Nothing happened much today...the network wasn't fixed and we're now decided to wait for the Cox guy on Tuesday to try and fix it and I think from what I understand try and do something to allow the two computers to see each other through the router...I think I understand that part of the problem is the way the cable modem is set up.

So anyway we also got the computer a bit tweaked, got Norton rid of because it was having problems with the new setup and plus Cox has antivirus that is at least just as good for free and we were using that....

AND THEN.... when we got home from the groceries that we went after while I was waiting for the virus checker to complete, I checked my mail real quick and then got off right about 1 hour and 50 minutes ago to eat supper quickly and mom hops on the computer!!!!

So I had to miss the Bible study because of the same old thing that I had to put up with for the last darned almost two years and more....mom on something that is at least HALF MINE and forcing me either to wait for her to get off or me to ASK TO USE something that is at least half mine!

And I missed the study because of that...and I was fully expecting to make it...I should have WAITED to eat and left the chicken tenders sitting in the bag out on the table and made the Study.

i hate having to ask to use something that's partly or wholly mine...it's like asking permission to sleep on my own bed or asking permission to wear my own clothes!

Well we have the next more minor irritation/complication.

One of the things we all did while trying to get the network back was go to the Cox site and download this thing...I think I mentioned it in the earlier entry, the thing we downloaded to replace the Norton that started having c: access errors when trying to do scheduled scans.  It is just as good as Norton and could have as much updates for free as Norton...well it has parental controls which mom decided go ahead and do for our sakes (to keep especially me from any temptation as well as her) as well as to protect my niece and nephew when they come over.  Of course smart mom wouldn't tell any password....but they (even Uncle Wayne) forgot something.

There's a setting in the Anti-Spyware part, or maybe it is the whole package, that is password protected settings.    One of those settings is in a group of checkboxes and one of those is this totally asinine thing for disabling access to the Task Manager which is the box that pops up when the user does the CNTL-ALT-DEL and it details how much of the RAM memory is used, how many programs and system stuff is running, etc....

I mean what is the point of having that in a spyware, antivirus, parental control thing?  Disable the TaskMan????  That is so stupid!!!  And they checked it!!!  Never did even my uncle know that the spyware sweeper found this DivX Pro 5.1 (related to Gator/GAIN) on the disk and it said it could not take it out so I went to the sites that said how to do it manual and it said to kill it by bringing up the TaskMan...

I do so but get the message it is disabled by Admin.  So I do everything....and then mom comes back and asks if it found anything and I told her what I saw and that I was going to reboot but I wanted to get back on her side (so I went on my side to cancel out her password) and she was irritated at me because I forgot that I was told to go tell her when it found things and that I was doing all this instead of calling uncle.  So I got in touch with him and that is when we learned about the taskman disable.  We were told not to worry much about it though since the DivX thing is quite a new thing and that it could wait until the next time he comes out.

And now after mom got off the phone with him, she wanted me to go and show her what it was and I was going to show her on the program, now somehow she has grayed out on the little box the anti-spyware thing so I can't get to it...

Nova Roma

Today's instance of lazy macronational thinking.....

edit yeah I forgot that there are few Latin words that are pluralized by -es. *facepalm*

Lar and lares being one pattern.

The below proves that even people that have the most contact with me doesn't even know how to speak Latin much less the CORRECT pluralization of Latin nouns...

When my mom asked if the antivirus finished and found anything I said....

"Yeah it found a few virii on there..."

"A few what...?"

*semi-audible sigh* *groaned it out*---> "Viruses..."

Note to everyone out there, no matter how many other people would tell you otherwise...the plural of a Latin noun ends in "ii" not "es"...it's virii not viruses!

Stuff like that always remind me of the first time things like that started bugging me...there was a commercial for a local Ford dealership and they had this cute perky blond with dimples...and the commercial was showcasing the latest year model of the Ford Focus and guess how she pluralized that?

Yep.... "Focuses"....I so totally cringed every time the commercial came on and sternly said out loud even at work to the TV "It's 'focii' you idiot!"
